Develop a Belief System That Works for You – Key to Creating the Life You Desire
Most of us carry beliefs that have been passed down to us by others. As we grew up, we had many influences that shaped our way of thinking. Some of what we were taught is useful and serves us well. However, much of what we carry with us does us great harm. Until we examine our belief system, we will not be able to create the life we truly desire.
It is worth noting that the majority of society is free.
There is a percentage of the population that is incarcerated for crimes against society. Similarly, there are people who live in political cultures that do not value the freedom of their citizens. Nevertheless, the majority of people in the world live in relative freedom. They can choose whom to marry, how to earn a living, and where to live. Most societies allow their people to move about freely without restrictions. As long as the individual abides by the laws, there is considerable freedom in behavior.
The freedoms offered by governments are physical freedoms enjoyed by all their law-abiding members. However, many operate in a “prison” atmosphere, regardless of what happens to them. This prison does not exist on a material plane. It is rather a creation of the mind. It is generated from the individual’s belief system. These beliefs become the prison guards of people.
Most will tell you they can think independently.
Suggesting they are incapable of creating their own ideas is met with overwhelming opposition. All their successes, experiences, and intelligence give them a sense of independence. They mistakenly believe that their belief system is their own creation. Unfortunately for them, this is not the case.
The basic concept of creating the life you desire is to create a belief system, which is appropriate for you. Contrary to what most people think, our belief systems are shaped by influences around us. Teachers, parents, friends, colleagues, and institutions all contribute to the beliefs we live by.
Have you noticed that children’s ideas often mirror their parents’ ideas?
It is so common that political organizations conduct surveys among schoolchildren during presidential elections because they accurately reflect adult sentiments.
The governments of the world are masters at shaping the belief system of their people.
Through propaganda, public opinion is shaped based on the desires of the ruling class. This is often done in the name of nationalism. A group of people posing a threat to society is created. Events are shown to confirm this point of view, while simultaneously creating emotional hostility towards this group. In this way, the government can act as it sees fit, with the full support of its citizens. Unfortunately, most people do not have firsthand experience to formulate solid conclusions. Of course, they will defend their faith, even if they are not sure where it came from.
People and organizations often manipulate the beliefs of others for control. The government is one example. Some religions throughout history have acted in a similar manner. They used the threat of an angry God and eternal damnation to control the masses. There have been many cases where the Anglican Church was the most powerful organization in Europe. With followers under control, it is much easier to maintain influence. Of course, there are many denominations where this is not the case. The same goes for many people whose lives are better because of their religious affiliation. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
The key to a belief system is to create one that works for you.
As an adult, you have the freedom to believe in anything you desire. Spending time questioning where some of your beliefs came from is healthy. It is also effective to determine if they still work for you. If they help you be happy, joyful, and free, they are worth it. However, when they instill pain, perhaps it is time to reconsider them.
Ironically, the beliefs that seem to cause the greatest chaos in people’s lives often come from those who love us the most. Many suffer from mental disorders caused by parental influence. Things like low self-esteem, abandonment, and sexual problems stem from our upbringing. Typically, a person suffering from any of these diseases feels guilt and shame. It has been shown that their worth was tied to results that were never good enough. Mistakes were not forgiven but rather used as a weapon to make the other person feel worse. All of this was done as a form of control.
Fast forward 20 years and find that a person who grew up in such an atmosphere often still carries these beliefs within them. Although recent experiences prove otherwise, the individual still hears the parent’s words. It affects relationships with friends, lovers, coworkers,
and oneself. Without help, the person is often unable to interact healthily with others. There is a degree of illness in everything they do. In this way, the individual turns to other things to fill the void that exists, whether it be drugs, alcohol, sex, or food. However, if the belief system is perceived as crazy, the person may be willing to change it. Simply changing a few basic beliefs about oneself magically changes life.
The more we can accept that what we believe comes from others, the greater our chances of achieving freedom.
There are many things we were taught by other adults growing up that serve us well. This is particularly true if we were raised in a loving home. However, society is so selfish that much stands in the way of our happiness. Analyzing our belief system reaches the roots of what motivates us. A system that contains a lot of fear often causes a person to act under the influence of that fear. The reverse is also true. Creating “our” life begins with creating “our” own belief system.
