What are Runes? Runic Alphabet, Use, Meaning
Runes signify mysteries. They are closely linked to the subconscious. Despite many complexities, their history tells us that in the era of antiquity, Germanic and Nordic tribes used them to make contact with various types of energies, which could support individuals in making decisions or warn them of danger. Interestingly, their application has not changed even in modern times. They may magically resonate with us, and this association is most apt. Runes possess a power that often helps us understand our feelings towards a task or question. There is no pre-defined material from which they should be made. The symbol is what matters most.
RUNIC ALPHABET
The runic alphabet has many incarnations, but the most popular and well-known is Futhark, whose name is derived from the first six letters of the alphabet: Fehu – Uruz – Þurisaz – Ansuz – Raido – Kenaz. It contained 24 basic runes, which were organized into three groups of eight each.
The first of these is called Freya (beginning with Fehu and ending with Wunjo). It encompasses the creation and assignment of the functioning principles of the Universe. This can be described on the basis of two elements, water and fire, from which everything began.
The second is named Hagal (beginning with Hagalaz and ending with Sowilo). It refers to the next moment in the cycle of evolution. It’s about the meeting of chaos with destructive power. Their task is the continuous struggle with each other, the fruit of which is development. These forces try to introduce inequality among what is organized and static in the cosmos.
The third set is called Tyra (beginning with Tiwaz and ending with Othala). These Runes relate to every force that has been given to humanity. They constitute a set of tools with transforming power, and their task is to send information about the condition of a given person.
RUNES – USE
One could argue that this old energy accompanying the topic of Runes no longer personally concerns us. Indeed, their historical connotations may seem somewhat inadequate to the present, although such a statement is still very erroneous. You can use the energy of Runes to solve your problems, indicate the right path. They can prove helpful in situations when we lack certainty in a topic. They have the power to clarify and specify what seems unclear to us. They do not predict the future and do not provide precise answers. Thus, Runes can be considered whispers, suggestions, for which the subconscious of the inquirer must find the answer.
It is extremely important to remember that Runes do not set a final scenario, the only certain path before us. The future is flexible and depends on the changes made by the person. Every path you follow has a chance to be changed, only when you sit at the helm of your life and steer it in a different direction.
RUNIC COMMUNICATION
Your communication with Runes mainly depends on your initial state. To make contact with them, you need to calm your mind and relax your body. It’s about entering a state where you are fully focused on the question you plan to ask. The next step is to summon those who, through prayer or angelic power, will accompany and guide us through the reading.
Once these activities have been performed, you should arrange on your chosen surface, material, on which we will be placing the drawn Runes. It can be your favorite cloth, towel, tablecloth, anything that is important or attractive to you.
We begin. A person draws one Rune and places it on the fabric. Their task is then to analyze its meaning. Over time, one can try to draw several symbols and deal with reading all of them.
RUNES – MEANING
1. FEHU
This is the first Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
Fehu is a symbol of fire, which finds its place as an integral element of evolution. This Rune is focused on well-being, success, and materiality. It is often mentioned in the context of order. Its guardian is Frey, the God of happiness, wealth, and fertility.
Fehu supports the process of enrichment, reaching for one’s dreams, gaining important people and situations for oneself. This symbol attracts the essence of happiness to us, simultaneously resonating with financial and developmental energy. It’s important to remember that wealth is not always related to what we physically possess, but also to what we hold inside. Therefore, it can be observed that Fehu will support us on both external and internal planes.
The symbol of this Rune fits best with people who engage their energy from the field of abundance of lack. Fear of what might slip away causes everything we have or potentially could have to be minimized. Fehu will help such individuals to enter into the vibration of abundance of fullness. When we keep this symbol at our workplace, we inadvertently pave the way to achieving success. This Rune signifies fulfillment not only in professional but also in romantic or spiritual aspects.
Fehu strengthens our sense of well-being, shows us our value, and strongly resonates with the root chakra.
When the energy of this Rune remains blocked, immense suffering is created. In society and important relationships, the emotion of jealousy arises, through which we face continuous losses and problems emerging out of nowhere. When we use the symbol of Fehu, we are able to learn to cope with impulses, practice patience, and deal with failures. Such a symbol, when in a reversed position, signifies unexpected expenses, a sense of insufficiency. However, this energy is just a warning for us to focus on ourselves and not get involved in all the chaos coming our way.
2. URUZ
This is the second Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
The symbol of this Rune is expressed using the letter “U”. Uruz is inseparably linked through its translation to the Aurochs or Bull, a powerful animal of strength, which emanated immense force.
Rune Uruz resonates best with those who have creative potential and resources to realize greater or lesser goals. Its power concerns the balance between what is related to the spirit and what is related to the body. It clearly emphasizes that only balance can support us in achieving the greatest power. Uruz is about strength, but not workaholism. This Rune proves that it’s possible to fulfill great dreams without overworking oneself. Certainly, such potential will prove attractive, so consider where you need it most.
This is a symbol of independent individuals who wish to walk their own paths in life, even if they have to go against the current. Rune Uruz may turn out to be a guardian that protects us from anxious states, abundance of lack, moments when we stand before impulsive, often senseless decisions. It can be said that this symbol acts as a kind of courage activator, allowing us to overcome difficulties.
Its energy is also focused on body regeneration, inner healing, strengthening. Uruz will help you translate words into actions and initiate favorable cycles of events. It is like its own symbol, the Bull – not acknowledging any differing opinions, full of strength, power, and awareness of the direction it wants to go.
When Uruz begins to appear in a reversed position, it signifies completely opposite feelings than in its upright position. Such individuals may then experience the sensation of being under someone’s dictatorship, in a state of chronic powerlessness. When you feel drained, lacking inspiration, motivation, and your energy is evidently disturbed, find time for yourself. It’s important to check your health from a medical standpoint and begin practices of being with yourself, being in yourself – e.g., meditation. It has an incredibly positive impact on bringing energetic balance.
3. THURISAZ
This is the third Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
This Rune focuses on taking control of one’s life and finding one’s purpose. Its power is directly related to defensive strength. It concerns both what is good and what is bad. This can be visualized through the concepts of war and peace. The energy of Rune Thurisaz can be modified through the intentions of the individual.
This Rune is a catalyst that accounts for the release of individual potential. It’s about stimulating creativity in oneself. Thanks to it, we can gain insight into what does not work, what does not function in symbiosis with us and consequently does not serve us. Thurisaz removes toxicities from our life using the true fire contained in the flame of this Rune. It indicates conflict between what is known and what is new.
Thurisaz helps us reach the essence of ourselves, i.e., our soul’s plan. It enables us to make decisions about ourselves from a position of consciousness and our own desires. This Rune is inseparably linked with striving towards our goals, as well as systematically purging ourselves of various emotions. It’s about the fact that accumulated feelings in us (often unexpressed) are the reason for our lower vibrations and dissatisfaction.
Thurisaz wants us to be convinced of one of the most important life lessons, namely, learning from our own mistakes. It also speaks of the fact that development can only occur through uncomfortable, sometimes even unpleasant and painful situations. Defending against emotions thus makes sense only when we wish to stand still. When we decide to experience, we grow, we give ourselves room for transformation. It can be said that Thurisaz makes us aware that after the storm, the sun always comes out.
If you need support in the face of adversity, you can use this Rune for defense. It may serve as your caring amulet or shield that won’t stop you even in a moment of hesitation.
Thurisaz is energy that informs you about love, and sometimes about troubles in it. It may herald problems or various crises. However, its greatest power lies in the wisdom of transformation. It’s about the fact that every crisis is an opportunity for internal development.
Thurisaz may prove particularly helpful at a moment when you are wondering whether the plan you are implementing is really yours. Often, knowing nothing about ourselves, we agree to cooperations that are in no way ours. When Rune appears in a reversed position, it may try to warn us of financial deficit or mental chaos. It encourages us to listen to the language of our heart – even in moments of life’s defeat. Individuals who draw Thurisaz in a reversed position should consider what does not serve them. Especially focus on unhealthy habits, or even addictions. This Rune may speak of misfortune, aggression, or simply a worse period in the life of the individual.
4. ANSUZ
This is the fourth Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
Its equivalents are “A” and Odin, the highest deity in Norse mythology. It may prove helpful in any artistic field, as its power aids in developing imagination or finding inspiration. Like a magnet, it ensures that people willing to support us on our artistic path surround us. Ansuz helps us find inspiration, internal balance, and life wisdom.
This Rune will not only prove extraordinary for specific artists but also for those who are still discovering their talent. Ansuz will help in finding one’s talent and the strong points of one’s personality. Its symbolism is also contained in rhetoric, i.e., the ability to communicate in a diplomatic way even in conflict situations (even with oneself). Ansuz helps us understand our fears through sincere conversation. Unintelligible to this Rune is the game of lies or heresies. When our intentions are insincere towards it, it may bring about many unfortunate events. A pity, because its power can be truly cleansing.
Ansuz is focused on creation, expressing oneself through words, life wisdom. Blockages related to this Rune mean that we may be more susceptible to the opinions and views of other people. Such a situation may suggest to us that perhaps we are in the midst of realizing a plan not of our soul. Balance and agreement are related not only to the external world but also to our internal world.
When we draw Ansuz in a reversed position, it means that we should treat it as a warning. This Rune informs us of the internal chaos that has likely settled in us. Often in romantic relationships, it can be information about cheating or insincere intentions of the partner. In work, it speaks of potential quarrels or uncomfortable situations. Ansuz is a warning for us against self-serving people. From the moment of drawing this Rune, it is worth analyzing all events that take place in our life. Likely, these observations will help us draw accurate conclusions and inner learning.
5. RAIDHO
This is the fifth Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
Its equivalent is “R”, which finds its explanation in activity, travels, and the symbol of the wheel. Raidho talks about changes leading to internal development.
The aforementioned travels associated with the energy of this Rune speak of them ambiguously. It’s about travels into oneself, one’s spirituality. Its vibration is so powerful that it can set even the most static energies in motion. It will support those who dream and wish to achieve their goals. Raidho is also related to removing blockages within us, which often keep us away from what we truly desire.
This Rune encourages us to open up to the surrounding world and find something of our own in it. However, this is about building something of our own, breaking away from the surrounding frames or schemes. Its transformative potential is particularly important in this energy, which many times enables us to cope with situations that pull us down and rid ourselves of unfavorable states for us. The vibration of this Rune speaks volumes about the freedom it is able to lead us to, once we allow it.
In ancient times, Raidho in the form of a talisman was used to assist in interdimensional travels. This Rune in the symbol of the wheel contains situations recurring in our life. They are like unprocessed lessons that will appear in our life invariably until we learn what they are trying to convey to us. When we draw Raidho, we can treat it as assurance of upcoming changes in our life. They may concern trips, but also the movement of certain aspects in our life. Energetic blockage of Raidho may manifest as a restless time when we encounter life’s difficulties, obstacles.
When we draw the Rune Raidho in a reversed position, most likely it will be related to some kind of stoppage in the private or professional sphere. In relationships, it most often refers to unfortunate arguments, the result of which are losses in people, i.e., separations. In work, it concerns chaos or even sudden loss of job. The Rune carries with it a warning against living beyond oneself, beyond one’s intuition, one’s heart, and desires.
6. KENAZ
This is the sixth Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
The letter corresponding to it is “K”, and its name can be translated as a mirror. Its symbolism is related to working on oneself in a spiritual and scientific way. Kenaz is focused on adhering to duties.
Kenaz focuses around our personal creation, self-satisfaction, fulfillment, and motivation. It directs us towards undertakings that may support us on our path. Usually, it does not work the other way around. Its symbol may foretell deep feelings or inspiration. Kenaz is directly related to fire, which in a controlled manner illuminates our path and accompanies us with its limitless warmth. As is known, it is an untamed element that sometimes can change course and start acting to our detriment.
When Kenaz appears in combination with Berkano and Ingwaz, it will signify birth or a new, fresh start. The meaning of this Rune can also be interpreted through the so-called fire in relationships (passion, passion), solid, durable ground, and even healing. The torch associated with the symbolism of Kenaz also concerns illuminating issues unclear to us, i.e., innuendos or slanders. When this Rune appears in the negative (reversed position), then it may try to warn us of chronic hopelessness, all kinds of burnout. It may relate to private life, professional sphere, or the romantic sphere, where most often then, separations, family troubles, and numerous lies occur.
Kenaz is a powerful Rune whose power requires great respect, so when we draw it in an upright position, it should be taken seriously. It indicates a powerful creative charge, the presence of which is now probably very unique.
However, when we draw this Rune in a reversed position, it should be equally important information for us. Kenaz may inform us about an approaching fire. Looking deeper, it may talk about lower vibrations in our life, which may be accompanied by apathy, and even depression. Kenaz tries to tell us that earlier we were like fire – uncontrollable, rushing forward without thinking. Its reversed symbol wants to convert us and remind us that thinking is equally important, and sometimes even more important than making decisions and acting. Depending on what you ask, Kenaz will indicate the answer. When you ask about love, it may mean a worse time in the relationship. However, when you ask about health condition, it can indicate diseases, and even burns. Kenaz advises us not to focus on what does not serve us but to grasp what lifts us up, what supports our high vibration.
7. GEBO
This is the seventh Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
Gebo deals with balance, i.e., sending and receiving energy. It talks about giving always to take, and taking to give. Without looking too closely at the symbol of Gebo, one might think that it resembles a cross. Indeed, there is some truth to that, but upon closer inspection, we read that contained in this symbol are four Runes of Kenaz. This refers to the four elements, i.e., all possible planes of our existence.
Gebo signifies feelings that are contained in extraordinary, romantic stories. When you draw this Rune, you know that a gift from the universe awaits you, something unexpected, exceptional. Gebo not only supports ongoing relationships but also caringly helps us end those that no longer serve us. This Rune is focused on balance, thanks to which we reach complete energetic equilibrium. Only it is able to connect us with our interior in order to contact our soul’s plan.
There is a mantra “Everything I give out, comes back to me multiplied”. This is how Gebo works. It talks about if we sent out our energy, then it will return to us in the form of people, situations, events. This Rune may inform us about someone’s unclean intentions, self-interest, and thus care for our relationships.
Gebo may refer to energetic balance or its lack in a person’s life. One can treat the message of this Rune as information reminding us of what is truly important.
When you evoke Gebo in a reversed position, it may try to tell you about an energetic imbalance, as well as blockages that have accumulated in your interior. It may turn out that you are holding a snake in your pocket, unable to awaken sincere sympathy in yourself, and deep down you desire revenge for your failures. Gebo may also herald a worse time in a relationship as well as imbalance between sending and receiving energy.
8. WUNJO
This is the eighth and simultaneously the last Rune in Futhark, belonging to the first of the previously mentioned groups. Each of them corresponds to a different sphere. This first one is focused on the beginnings of everything, on the creation of the Universe, and systematizing its functioning.
Wunjo signifies happiness associated with self-satisfaction, favorable cycles, and good reputation. Its symbol refers to raising one’s vibration through the company of the right people, being in places that have a beneficial influence on us, and being among high-energetic objects. So, one can say that Wunjo is an invitation to happiness in our life. Like Gebo, it teaches us a lot about energetic balance. This Rune wants us to look at all events through the prism of lessons that can teach us something. Wunjo shows us happiness from another side. For this Rune, it is most important that we perceive happiness as a collection of small things. This is precisely what it will try to teach us, if only we allow it.
Wunjo can be identified with karma, which returns to us at a favorable moment and brings much good. This Rune encourages us to be among people who are supportive of us and raise our vibration. It is extremely important to remember to live in symbiosis with our environment. To receive and give. Wunjo may explain to us that happiness is achieved by those who walk the path of light. It is available to everyone who is sincere with themselves and the environment, sheds falsehood, and desires life according to the plan of their soul. If this Rune appears in your life just after situations that were difficult or unhappy for you, it likely heralds their end.
Wunjo encourages us to be grateful and to enjoy even the smallest moments. It also talks about not becoming our own emotions and preventively clearing our head of excess thoughts and emotions. Thanks to this Rune, you will find support for your heart chakra, which will open you to life’s positivity and healing. Its healing power is not only contained in internal healing but also in the precise selection of the company that you find yourself in.
When you draw Wunjo in a reversed position, it means that you are likely to find yourself in a complicated situation, which you will have to face alone. This Rune likely warns you against rash decisions and the loss of close ones. Relationships, about which we may inquire, Wunjo will bring to deeper crises, and sometimes even their breakdowns. The energy of this Rune will indicate to us insincere intentions of our surroundings. Even if Wunjo clarifies many more negative issues in our life, it is worth noting that its action does not last too long.
9. HAGALAZ
This is the ninth Rune from Futhark and the first of the second eight, Atta Hagal. Its meaning is focused on complete transformation, great change that will bring about many transformations in value systems.
Hagalaz symbolizes the untamed energy of hail. It’s about getting rid of what is no longer beneficial for us and realizing that through every (even the worst) situation, we are able to go through. This Rune focuses on intuition. It talks about the fact that only when we trust ourselves and allow our inner light to lead us, then we will reach exactly where we wanted. Its energy is focused on shedding toxic patterns and leaving behind everything that is destructive and harmful. The power of hagalaz almost urges us to liberate ourselves from socio-cultural frames and follow our own, sometimes even winding path.
The power of this rune positively influences supporting us in developing our goals and pursuing our dreams. The changes it brings may seem too drastic and exaggerated, but always after some time, we start to appreciate them and feel gratitude. When we refuse to cooperate with the energy of this rune, we begin to perceive the world negatively. It seems to us that everyone wants ill for us. Frustrations and internal conflicts arise. Our desire to remain in a certain place, stagnation, and life in our comfort zone is natural, but it is very important to notice that such comfort will not help us in any way.
Hagalaz goes deeper, looks at us through the lens of what would be seen and what is invisible. It may prove useful in states of chronic hopelessness and prove helpful in moments when we need to work through those worse emotions within ourselves. The power of Hagalaz is so immense that it should be used rather rarely, and after using it, it should be treated with fire and burned.
This Rune helps maintain stable energy, even though it contains great, elemental power. It can indicate self-interested people, unnecessary items, unhealthy habits, and toxic relationships we undertake in our life. Thanks to the energy of Hagalaz, we have the opportunity to look critically at our life and find out what we should get rid of. The Rune is related to creativity and undertaking changes. It will infallibly verify what belongs to us and simultaneously serves us, and what should not have a place in our life.
When you draw Hagalaz in a reversed position, certainly you can expect a more difficult period in your life. It may be related to finances, their instability, stagnation, or deficit. If it concerns love, then there may appear insincerities related to lack of communication, dishonesty, and even betrayals. When asking about health, a reversed Rune may herald a worse condition and various diseases. In work, it refers to burnout and overwork. Hagalaz invites us to build something new and leave behind what is unfavorable and toxic.
10. NAUTHIZ
This is the tenth Rune in Futhark, and also the second of the second eight. Its meaning is focused on duty, otherwise compulsion, or on desire.
Nauthiz emphasizes that before we care for anyone else, we should first take care of our own needs. Its symbol consists of two sticks, which seem to ignite a fire by rubbing against each other.
This rune signifies movement, something inevitable, environmental imperfections. Nauthiz indicates what desires to be satisfied in us. This symbol obliges a person to actions for what should be done, not what that individual would like to do at the moment. This Rune wants to teach us patience. It will place us in situations that will eventually teach us this skill. Its energy contributes to giving pace to situations or processes that are not expected by us. To make a change, we can try to understand our unsatisfied needs, our duties towards ourselves. All the negatives associated with this Rune are, however, related to inevitable development. If we direct acceptance towards those issues that seem insurmountable to us, probably the action of this Rune will normalize. If we cultivate the virtue of patience in ourselves, certainly the time of Nauthiz’s action will be very precious for us. We will end it by processing certain lessons, richer in experience and knowledge.
Nauthiz causes us to make a decision about how we want to direct our life, in which direction to go. Its energy is focused on action. It wants to make us aware that everything we undertake brings us closer to the goal.
It may seem that Nauthiz is a Rune of negative, destructive energy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Its short-term action may be perceived as such, but in the long term, it is a blessing that has moved more than one person towards their goal. For people who have lost their way somewhere in their life or got stuck in the theater of reality, Nauthiz will help find the right path and finally take the helm. If this Rune appears in your life, it may mean that you should abandon your current lifestyle and look for something in line with your soul’s plan.
The Rune allows us to experience, shows our limitless possibilities, thanks to which we can develop. If we’ve lost ourselves in life and struggle with a lack of certainty about who we really are, Nauthiz helps us define and find our needs. When the Rune remains untouched, i.e., the person has not undertaken work with its energy, then they will be stuck in their martyrdom, looking at the world through a gray-brown filter.
When Nauthiz is drawn in its natural position, i.e., upright, it may mean that we will find a remedy for the problems that torment us. If we ask about the financial sphere, it is then worthwhile to focus on what is most important to us and not thoughtlessly squander finances. In human relations, it usually refers to communication problems or leaving a relationship that has ceased to be beneficial for us. If we inquire about health, Nauthiz heralds a short-term illness. This Rune, in such an edition, places before us events that require some thought. It’s especially about not giving in to impulses, shedding choleric tendencies, and stopping spontaneous decisions.
When Nauthiz appears in our life in a reversed position, then likely many issues in our life will be put to the test. We may experience difficulties and complications on many levels. In this negative chaos, it’s about looking at our life through the prism that every difficulty teaches us something new and thanks to them we can grow in knowledge and experience, which build our relationship with what is inside – with the soul.
11. ISA
This is the eleventh Rune in Futhark, and the third from the second group. Its symbolism is focused around virtues such as patience, understanding, balance, and concentration.
Isa is like the moment before a great storm, i.e., calmness, a moment of pause, contemplation, meditation. When this Rune appears in our life, we should be aware of the upcoming overturn in our life, but also a moment resembling a vacuum. Nothing happens, does not move, we are given an expanse of time to cool down. After that comes the moment when patience will be very important.
Isa warns against choleric, impulsive actions. It wants to inform us that what is best is achieved over time. This Rune accompanies us in great transformations, allowing separation of ourselves from our ego. The past, which likely will start to knock on our door at this period, should be analyzed by us in an empathetic and caring way. Isa will help us not enter into emotions but find distance and understand that we have no influence over some events – especially not the past.
When we cooperate with the energy of this Rune, our concentration becomes much stronger, and the accompanying anxiety disappears. The power of Isa also lies in its unlimited power, overshadowing even the rest of the Runes. Thanks to its energy, we will take care of our head, learn calmness, and explore the meaning of our existence. Isa can affect us in such a way that we look at deeply painful matters from a distance, thus finding in them a certain sense and intrinsic beauty.
Isa is related to winter, which symbolically is related to waiting for warmer months. It gives us space to think about whether we want to continue the current path or understand which direction we want to turn.
Isa is a safe brake, through which we see certain imperfections from a non-judgmental but accepting position. It is helpful in chaotic everyday life when we often forget about important matters and focus on keeping up with something. The power of this Rune supports us in inner journeys and protects against aggressive behaviors from our environment, and sometimes even ourselves.
When Isa appears in our life in an upright position, then it signifies stagnation and space for contemplation. In the sphere of life we inquire about, unexpected complications may appear. However, when it appears in a reversed position, then we can prepare for financial losses and relationship distancing. Likely, Isa heralds distancing from a partner, as well as states of depression and deep sadness.
12. JERA
This is the twelfth Rune in Futhark, and also the fourth from the second eight. Its energy is focused on acquiring life wisdom and a gift from fate, which is the result of our work. The symbolism of Jera signifies abundance.
This Rune talks about everything we need comes at the moment we express readiness for it. Jera informs us that everything is as it should be and that nothing happens by chance. It wants to convey to us the virtue of peace and patience, not to harvest prematurely. Jera broadens our perception and shows that even when we do not see any development opportunities at the moment, they still exist and are hidden in our everyday life.
This Rune visualizes before us the cycle of existence, which is adequate for each area of our life. The most important thing, however, is to arm ourselves with patience and understanding that everything comes in its time.
When we ponder the meaning of the Rune, we will most likely conclude that for some, it will mean the coming success and a sort of reward for life’s effort. For others, it may mean symbolic death in various areas of their life, e.g., the ending of certain relationships.
If Jera appears in our life, we can be sure it heralds the culmination of what we have worked on recently. If we are satisfied with ourselves because our work was good and in harmony with our soul, we don’t have to worry about its negative connotation. However, if we undertook actions inconsistent with ourselves, then we will face such an effect and such a reward.
When we draw the Rune Jera in a reversed position, then we may be negatively surprised when we see the effect of what we have been waiting for. Its energy in such a layout focuses on thoughtlessly squandering money, impulsively making decisions, and senseless plans.
When asking about health, it probably refers to chronic diseases and depressive states. If we wonder about work, then it relates to professional stagnation. When we ask about human relationships, Jera in a reversed position usually refers to complications, lack of respite. It’s important to keep in mind that the energy of this Rune is also related to legal problems and significant losses.
13. EIHWAZ (IWAZ)
This is the thirteenth Rune from Futhark, and also the fifth from the second eight. Its name is associated with the yew tree. The energy of this Rune contains the dance of two energies – spiritual and physical. It speaks of internal transformation, development, striving towards a goal.
Eihwaz is not a simple Rune. Its vibration is focused on what is least understandable for us – death. Its task is to introduce balance between new life and departure from this world. Eihwaz teaches us that death is what awaits us all, and the fear of it only hampers us from experiencing it in this life. Thanks to this Rune, we have the opportunity to delve into our inner selves and understand our dark sides. It is these shadows and demons that require transformation into something positive and good. These inner changes greatly serve us in finding our own path and connecting with our soul.
The essence of Eihwaz is departure from the physical world and focusing on our inner self. Earthly matters often attach us to this world, where it’s so easy to forget about intuition and everything most beautiful, i.e., our inner world. When we wonder what hinders us, blocks us from going towards our goal, Eihwaz will definitely point to these issues. This Rune thus provides information about what we should work on and how. When we stand at a life crossroads, the energy of this Rune may prove indispensable and necessary when seeking answers to questions that haunt us internally.
Eihwaz strengthens our intentions, positively affects the wealth of internal journeys, and even improves contact with our inner world. It protects us from the fear of departing from this world, various ailments, susceptibility to others’ opinions, and people with impure intentions.
When Eihwaz appears in our life in a reversed position, then certainly we can expect an upcoming chaos in our life. Its energy will show us easy pickings in the form of quick rewards, which we can achieve without much effort. These mini-successes will be only temporary and fleeting satisfaction, under which will lie our dissatisfaction and even lack of self-belief. Eihwaz informs us about upcoming troubles and indicates relationships that no longer serve us. When asking about romances, it usually heralds complications and misunderstandings. If we inquire about health, it concerns diseases that have the power to kill us.
14. PERTHRO
This is the fourteenth Rune from Futhark, and also the sixth from the second eight. It refers to mystery, karmic power, and the possibility of choice. It can be treated as an element whose task is to show us the true plan of our soul. Its energy says that changes are necessary to avoid stagnation. If fear rules us, we avoid entering into our transformation both soul and body, then we will miss lessons that are essential for our inner self.
Pethro illustrates our fear, shows the sense and purpose of our existence, and the karma we should work off in this life. The energy of this rune will illuminate everything that is in darkness or hides in the nooks and crannies of our life. It will do it with premeditation, to show us what we should focus on in this life.
If we are searching for our destiny, this Rune will help us get closer to our soul and learn about its plan. Its support will allow us to make the best choices for us. Perthro has a supporting power not only on the subconscious level but also in helping to abandon addictions and accepting the dark sides of our soul.
Perthro allows us to connect with our intuition and listen to our inner voice. Thanks to its powerful force, it allows us to accept life in solitude and embark on the path leading to destiny.
When Perthro appears in our life in a reversed position, we should consider it a red light in any sphere. If we have contact with stimulants, we should pay them more attention, as they may lead us into a sea of troubles. Perthro signifies fatigue, depression, and living alone. When asking about relationships, it usually means the time to fix rash decisions or complicated past. If health is of interest, it likely refers to the use of anesthesia. It also relates to incorrect test results. Those interested in career matters may be exposed to impulsive, poor decisions and self-interested and merciless coworkers. Perthro paints a picture of life in harmony with our inner voice, which according to the Rune is the only way to happiness.
15. ALGIZ
This is the fifteenth Rune from Futhark, and also the seventh from the second eight. Its energy is focused on a sense of security and support. When we find a common language with our inner voice, then with the help of this Rune, we can get on the right track. Algiz encourages us to remember our worth and power. Only they ensure that this Rune breeds protective properties within itself.
Our individual energy should be used for our purposes. That is, when we engage our power reserves in development and our potential, then we are supported. However, when we decide on certain abuses, Algiz stops bestowing care on us.
It’s worth remembering that no other Rune has such protective potential. Its power is so great that it not only provides us with safety in relationships with the external world but also with what is inside, i.e., our inner selves.
Algiz speaks of acting in harmony with our intuition. When we combat aggression, we protect ourselves and our loved ones. It’s important not to be afraid of this Rune. Every time it appears in our life (even in a reversed position), it brings good news. It’s a kind of message about the cycles approaching us and potential opportunities. If you need the caring protection of this Rune, draw it on your hand or forearm – you will definitely feel its supportive action.
The energy of Algiz is related to inner agreement, and protection against what is negative. Its action is very warm and nurturing. Algiz will help us gain peace and understand ourselves. However, when we do not cooperate with its energy, then negative situations start happening. We may feel a lack of grounding and instability.
When the symbol Algiz appears in our life in a reversed position, then we should carefully observe the environment (best to focus on this for the first three months). It may turn out to be a harbinger of worse mental states and a decrease in our vibration. When asking about financial matters, it likely refers to a lack of energetic symbiosis, i.e., an excess of taking and a deficit of giving. If we are interested in relationships, then most likely there will be dishonesty or betrayals. Those inquiring about health may experience a weakening of the body, and those interested in work will enter a state of professional stagnation and blockade. Algiz encourages prophylactic clearing of our head from the current excesses or deficits of energy.
16. SOWILO
This is the sixteenth Rune from Futhark, and also the last (eighth) from the second eight. It is associated with the sun, which can be interpreted as victory. This Rune can therefore be associated with positives and warmth. Sowilo can support us in moments of lower vibrations. When we are thirsty for inspiration and expanding our perception, this Rune can become almost a salvation for us. Sowilo sends us support, so we do not deny ourselves pleasures and live passionately. Its energy also concerns healthy common sense because it advises understanding our current capabilities and not overusing them.
It is said that Sowilo is a combination of three personalities: a mage, a warrior, and a sage. These traits allow this Rune to support us on every level. Of course, it wouldn’t all be so simple and beautiful if not for the fact that Sowilo expects us to be ready to cooperate with its energy. Its action will positively influence not only our actions but also health. Supporting our solar plexus, it strengthens our activity and ensures that we achieve an energetic balance.
Sowilo focuses on rewarding us for what we do correctly and in harmony with ourselves. Its power blesses us with happiness, warmth, and success. Circumstances begin to favor us, and all our previous efforts bring their fruits, which we can admire. If we cannot cooperate with the energy of the Rune, then our desire to act falls, and the world begins to appear to us as faded or grayed out. We lack care from the world and a sense of inner light.
When we draw Sowilo in a reversed position, it may mean failure in every possible aspect of our life. It can give rise to egocentrism, lack of communication desire, and even aggression. When asking about health, it signifies great stress leading to behaviors that lower our psychic and physical immunity. In work, it relates to misunderstandings. If it disheartens you that this symbol appears in a reversed position, do not despair. Every worse situation creates a field for learning, and Sowilo rarely dominates our life for a long time.
17. TEIWAZ
This is the seventeenth Rune from Futhark, and also the first from the third eight. Its energy is focused on courage and precision. It talks about how as people we undertake many actions for which we need to learn to take responsibility. Teiwaz teaches us what honesty and empathy are. Its power may even put us in situations that will expect us to show courage. This Rune also speaks of the virtue of cooperation. That the power lies in the group, so if we want to act as a team, each member must know they act for the group’s good.
When Teiwaz appears in our life, we must face the dance of two energies – masculine and feminine. It will encourage us to not fear new matters and to undertake challenges courageously.
Particularly, this Rune will support people who cannot decide what role they want to play in this life. It will support and indicate their strengths. Teiwaz speaks of systematicity and precision in work. When a person cooperates with the energy of this Rune, they may find themselves with a greater sense of purpose, perseverance, and organization of their life and plans. However, when its energy is blocked, we may face real chaos.
When Teiwaz appears in our life in a reversed position, then it likely sends us information about accumulating problems from the past and abusing our goodwill. When asking this Rune about interpersonal relationships, then we will likely learn about certain dishonesties, which sometimes can even lead to breakups. Those interested in work will have to deal with a worse time when they become undervalued.
18. BERKANO
This is the eighteenth Rune from Futhark, and also the second from the third eight. It is strongly connected to female energy, i.e., warmth of home, maternal care, and creation. Berkano is called the family Rune, which talks about nurturing the female element and celebrating feminine energy.
The symbol of this Rune is the birch. It can be considered a miracle of nature that supports everything good and removes what is bad. Berkano is associated with a sense of security and striving for unconditional love.
This Rune will prove helpful when we need to rebuild trust in ourselves and our existence. It stops us from impulsive, unthought decisions and teaches patience. It shows how often we engage in things that only drain our energy instead of giving something in return. Building a connection with our intuition, we may notice that something bigger, a stronger energy, watches over us. If you wish to create a protective amulet, write the name and surname of the being you want to protect on one side, and on the other, write the Berkano symbol three times.
The energy of this Rune is related to internal and external healing. It talks about celebrating existence and ceasing stagnation. It wants us to move forward and not be afraid of taking risks. However, when we do not cooperate with the energy of this Rune, then we lack self-satisfaction. It seems to us that everything we do is senseless.
When Berkano appears in our life in a reversed position, we may start to notice situations that were evidently meant to hinder us in some way. Its energy probably tells us that we are entering a stage of worse well-being and an inability to finish our undertakings. If we are interested in finances, it likely means that we need to be exceptionally focused on where our money is heading. When we are interested in relationships, it usually means breakups or lack of dynamics in the relationship. The most important message of the Rune, however, is noticing oneself and fighting for what is most important to us.
19. EHWAZ
This is the nineteenth Rune from Futhark, and also the third from the third eight. Its meaning refers to acting in symbiosis, the ability to cooperate, and emotional responsiveness in relationships. Ehwaz will support those who wish to find common ground. This Rune talks about acting through the prism of trust and selflessness.
Ehwaz will prove helpful when a person needs to introduce balance between giving and taking into their life. The relationship that this Rune talks about can be illustrated as a rider and horse. When there is a feature of trust between them, then both are able to act for mutual benefit. This understanding between one and the other comes from the desire to find out what true friendship and love are based on.
Ehwaz will help us in spiritual development, in finding the path of our soul. If harmonious relations are established, then the Rune will support us on our path.
Besides focusing on cooperation and development, Ehwaz also concerns spiritual and physical journeys. When it appears in our life, we should be ready for what’s coming. When the energy of this Rune is blocked, then in our life may appear insincerity, and even betrayals.
When we draw this Rune in a reversed position, we will probably lose ourselves in the relationship. It also concerns finding ourselves in a situation where we do not feel ourselves or what we like, what is important to us. When we act against ourselves, we can easily get lost and lose ground under our feet. If this happens through the wrong people, it’s best to start learning from mistakes. It’s extremely important to remember that Runes want to give us certain lessons. As long as we run from them, we will not gain anything from them. Ehwaz wants to make us aware that energetic balance, regardless of circumstances, is very important for us.
20. MANNAZ
This is the twentieth Rune from Futhark, and also the fourth from the third eight. Its symbol is not unambiguous. It refers to man, male energy, which is associated with digesting internal processes, brakes on various spheres of our life, or moving forward.
Mannaz focuses on balance, which is a fundamental value for our development. It allows us to understand who we are and why we act in certain ways. It may prove exceptionally supportive in collective actions.
Its symbol of man refers to him as a whole. This means it considers his entire person including strengths and weaknesses. Mannaz will prove helpful in teaching us something about ourselves. It will present what is consistent with our nature and what was performed by us without any consent from our soul. This process is meant to teach us humility and to view the world more forgivingly.
Mannaz focuses on developing responsibility for ourselves, thus enabling us to surrender to ourselves rather than to fate. Remember that every situation is a lesson, and every learning becomes our personal wealth.
Mannaz is a symbol of strength, happiness, and teamwork. This Rune encourages us to stop coloring reality and to learn acceptance regardless of conditions. However, when the energy of the Rune is blocked, then our bad habits and lack of empathy take the helm of our heart and steer it towards darkness.
When we draw Mannaz in a reversed position, then we are likely to face chaos. Collective undertakings may turn out to be full of hypocrisy and lack of understanding. We may feel individuality and dishonesty from the external world. In work, it relates to overburdening, and in health to depressive states and chronic diseases. Those asking about relationships may receive information that it might be better to focus on oneself rather than the external world at this complicated and crazy time. Remember that everything happening is for you.
21. LAGUZ
This is the twenty-first Rune from Futhark, and also the fifth from the third eight. Its symbol is associated with calm water, the surface of a lake. It can be interpreted as a path to facing one’s fears, a kind gaze into one’s interior, and focusing on what really belongs to us. Laguz bestows us with distance and perspective. Thanks to this Rune, we can look at different situations dryly, without entering emotional stories and re-experiencing the past anew.
Laguz works supportively, so it is best used when we need to deal with non-own chaos in our lives. The Rune has a purifying effect. Its energy goes well with the Wunjo Rune, enhancing the feeling of happiness. When we need to find ourselves in a leadership position, the energy of Laguz can also prove useful.
The water associated with the symbolism of Laguz talks about changes on the level of the subconscious. This Rune will strengthen our interiors to such an extent that “spiritual cleanings” will automatically occur in our life. It’s about discarding what has been imposed on us and accepting what belongs to us, what we need, what serves us. Laguz helps to get rid of blockages that prevent us from walking the path of our soul.
Giving oneself over to the guidance of this Rune will happen when we allow ourselves to listen to our inner voice. It’s important to remember that its connection with water concerns the so-called life’s tides and ebbs. It’s about the fact that the dynamics of existence focus on giving and taking. That’s what Laguz teaches us. It is the essence of intuition, good health, and faith.
When this Rune appears in our life in a reversed position, we receive a message that it’s time to do something about the matter we’re asking about. If we ignore this information, we will find ourselves in stagnation. Laguz calls for acting according to our intuition. If we ask about work, we will encounter blockages we did not expect. When interested in finances, negative surprises are ahead. In relationships, it usually involves an unhealthy dynamic between partners.
22. INGWAZ
This is the twenty-second Rune from Futhark, and also the sixth from the third eight. Its symbol refers to rest and regeneration. The energy of this Rune wants to teach us to manage our own energy. Ingwaz talks about spiritual development, inspiration, creation, and space for rest.
This Rune is associated with true passion and searching. When we do not allow ourselves to stand still and start searching for our talents and interests, then we ensure a happy life. Ingwaz will be a true support on this path. Its energy will also help us reconcile with the past and push it away from our present.
The message of this Rune is about dreams. When we ensure movement towards fulfilling them, Ingwaz will take care of the right circumstances and attract to us what can support us the most. Its power concerns the process, that is, everything is in something bigger. The protection offered by Ingwaz is related to what’s inside the given being. Thanks to such protection, we are able to provide ourselves with the most important things – time and space for decisions, experiences, plans.
When working with Ingwaz, we should not forget that everything comes at the right time, so without haste, great expectations, and impatience, we should remember about the present. When we draw this Rune, we get a message that what is negative is leaving our life. It’s such a message that we should arm ourselves with patience and strength because changes are within reach. When the energy of Ingwaz is blocked, then we are dealing with a feeling of hopelessness, depression, distraction, and lack of concentration.
If this Rune shows up in our life in a reversed position, then it likely means a momentary derealization. Perhaps it will have to do with the past and the fact that we can’t deal with it. It’s a message from the Universe that “here and now” is thirsty for our presence. When asking about finances, it means upcoming complications. Interested in work matters, it probably concerns changes, such as layoffs, retirement, or a department change. When asking about romantic relationships, it often means separation and even dealing with these issues singly.
23. OTHALA
This is the twenty-third Rune from Futhark, and also the seventh, the penultimate from the third eight. Its symbol is associated with generations, family tradition, rooted bonds around us. Othala talks about stabilization, understanding our position and our path.
This Rune is associated with life harmony, which allows us to make beneficial decisions in complicated situations. Its energy talks about development, abundance – especially in family relationships. Othala protects the home and supports family members in good contacts with each other and in feeling loved and needed in this small community.
When you need to strengthen in yourself a sense of security and community, this Rune may prove to be salvational. Its energy also focuses on older family members. When we decide to build mature relationships, then Othala will create the right conditions and take care of circumstances, so that the right people appear in our life.
If this Rune appears in our life in a reversed position, then we are likely to start facing energy blockades, whose main cause will be our internal derealization and running away from reality. Othala in such a position foretells depressive states, chronic feelings of depression, and the belief in a lack of agency. This way, we allow for random people to take the helm of our life. When asking about finances, it means serious debts. In professional matters, it relates to job loss. In relationships, it concerns excessive detachment from the ground and unbalancing dynamics between the two.
24. DAGAZ
This is the twenty-fourth, i.e., the last Rune from Futhark and the last from the third eight. Its symbolism is focused on harmony and balance. It focuses on striving for the best version of oneself and altruistic help. Its energy is extremely positive. It allows us to find in ourselves boundless love, whose power will always ensure the best way out of complicated situations. Dagaz focuses on great changes, searching for opportunities.
This Rune will be exceptionally helpful for those who wish to transform failures into successes. If we face matters whose energy becomes overwhelming for us, Dagaz will enable us to deal with them. Its power focuses on harmony on two levels – positive and negative, that is, light and darkness. Its energy allows us to understand that both are equally necessary for full life experience.
Dagaz will take care of ensuring that the right circumstances and the right people, whose task is to introduce balance and equilibrium in areas where we clearly face a lack, appear in our life. This Rune focuses on the dynamic development of our soul. When it appears in our life, it’s good to give oneself over to intuition and concentrate on our needs. It’s a kind of good message from the universe. It’s important to be attentive to its presence and to make the most of everything it has to offer.
When Dagaz appears in our life in a reversed position, we should not give it deeper interpretation. However, if we notice that its position is different than natural and different than reversed, then it likely means a feeling of unfulfillment, depression, and chaos. It may turn out to be information about excessive self-admiration and egocentrism. When asking about finances, it means greater attention to current expenses. In work, it relates to a lack of commitment, and in love, being subjected to numerous manipulations. Even if the appearance of this symbol in a reversed position disappoints you, don’t despair. Every worse situation gives a field for learning, and Dagaz rarely dominates our life for a long time.
